Bed bugs have been known as human parasites for thousands of years.  They were mostly eradicated in the developed world after World War II using DDT.  Bed bugs have increased in large numbers because of international travel and resistance to pesticides.

Although bed bugs can be infected with at least 28 human pathogens, no studies have been found that the insects are capable of transmitting any of these to humans.
